Life After Chantix

Chances are you have come here because you are considering taking Chantix, or have taken it and are looking for information about side effects. Many people have used Chantix successfully and have quit smoking with no serious side effects. As the owner of this site, I truly congratulate them and wish them well.

Unfortunately, there are many who are experiencing side effects while on, or after coming off of Chantix. This site is intended to be a resource for people to share experiences, and hopefully gain information, advice, and help from one another. (Sometimes it just helps to know you're not the only one experiencing something.) I am the companion of someone (M.) who has suffered fairly extreme effects - and we've set this site up because we know that it's difficult to find information and help while wading through the flames.

Originally this was being accomplished through an online bulletin board, but unfortunately it was overwhelmed by spam.

Instead, I'm asking that people send their information via email and I will post their information

In order to make the site easily searchable, it would be helpful if you construct your email with the following format:

Chantix User for: (number of weeks/months)
Currently Taking?: (yes/no)
Still Smoking? (yes/no)
Side Effects/Symptoms

USERNAME INFORMATION
MJN Chantix User for: (number of weeks/months) 3 weeks 12/25/07 - 1/16/08
Currently Taking?: (yes/no) no
Still Smoking? (yes/no) no
Side Effects/Symptoms

  • psychotic break that lasted 19 hours - hallucinations, tremors, muscle weakness, shaking/shivering, break with reality
  • personality change - sexually aggressive behaviour, general aggressiveness
  • severe memory loss
  • suicidal ideation - constantly thinking/talking about killing self
  • severe emotional swings
  • parosmia (phantom smell described as "black poison" - smelled like "burnt shit"
  • severe reactions to alcohol
  • lack of motivation, difficulty with concentration
  • depression
Noteworthy Despite being on Chantix for only 3 weeks, the side-effects lasted in a debilitating way for over a year. For the most part they have subsided, though MJN still believes his memory is affected and still occasionally experiences the parosmia.
